IDRC has supported Costa Rican researchers since 1973. The country’s history of political stability made it a vital Central American partner for research on agriculture, economic policy, democratization, disaster prevention, and information and communication technology.
 
IDRC contributed significantly to agricultural research in Costa Rica, with notable results such as increased corn and banana production.
 
IDRC supported years of research at Costa Rica’s Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Centre (CATIE) to test intercropping of trees with other crops.
