In 1971, a year after its creation,
IDRC began to support research in Egypt. Five years later, the Centre established its Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa in Cairo. Early
IDRC-supported research led to improvements in such areas as pest control, irrigation methods, food processing technology, water treatment systems, and maternal and child health-care services.
Recent research results have informed policymakers on international trade negotiations, reforms to support small and medium-sized enterprises, water conservation practices, and the health and well-being of adolescents.
