When IDRC started supporting research in Malawi in the late 1970s, work focused on improving both crops and cropping systems, an emphasis that continued into the 1980s, in keeping with the importance of subsistence agriculture to the country’s economy. Nutrition was also a priority research area and remains so today.

IDRC is also contributing to a large collaborative program to increase the capacity of health research institutions to generate new knowledge, and of health policy-making institutions to put that knowledge to use.
