IDRC began to support research in Nigeria in 1971. The Centre’s broad array of partnerships in the country led to significant contributions to knowledge, especially in agriculture, nutrition, and health.

This support for Nigerian researchers dwindled after the imposition in 1993 of a repressive military government, and the ensuing suppression of political opposition. Diplomatic contact between Canada and Nigeria ceased for four years and resumed in 1998 with the beginning of democratization. IDRC soon followed suit.
