IDRC has supported research in Syria since 1977, focusing on two complementary areas: agriculture and water. Among other results, researchers have shown how better crop rotation could improve yields and enhance soil fertility. They have also enabled farmers to store water more effectively for use in irrigation and other activities, and developed an interactive database of wild edible plants to promote better nutrition and food security in Syria and several other countries.

IDRC continues to support research on the environment and natural resource management in Syria, and on new areas such as information and communication technologies and the labour market. In many cases, research targets unequal relations between women and men.
