| About Connectivity Africa |
Connectivity Africa program has been closed as of February 2008. Historically, Connectivity Africa or CA, as it often was abbreviated, was one of three initiatives announced at the G8 Summit in Kananaskis in June 2002 as part of Canada's response to the G8 Africa Action Plan and the recommendations of the Digital Opportunity Task Force. The Connectivity Africa program was created to improve access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) in Africa. Connectivity Africa was implemented by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. The initiative supported research, development and innovative uses of ICT applications for African development. Priority sectors included education and health. Connectivity Africa was managed by IDRC through its offices in Ottawa, Canada; Cairo, Egypt; Dakar, Senegal; Nairobi, Kenya; and Midrand, South Africa. It operated in parallel with IDRC’s Acacia Initiative, which supports ICT research and initiatives to empower sub-Saharan African communities. Funding for Connectivity Africa came from the Canada Fund for Africa.
