The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) was launched in Dar es Salaam in February 1999. The NBI is a regional partnership within which countries of the Nile basin have united in common pursuit of the sustainable development and management of Nile waters. The Nile Basin Initiative seeks to harness the tremendous potential of the Nile for the benefit of the people of the basin, both now and for generations to come. This becomes a major challenge as economic development progresses, populations increase and demand for water grows.
